WHEN SHE got pregnant with their son Brent Marcus, Wazzup Wazzup host Archie Alemania made a request of his partner Mickey Ferriols: “I want you to stay home and take care of our baby.”
While she welcomed the excitement of being a mother and spending time with her baby, a part of Mickey also missed the exciting, frenetic pace of showbiz. She missed working. “I was used to it, and having to stop, it was a little hard to adjust,” says Mickey.
Mickey used to host the noontime show Magandang Tanghali, Bayan. In 2004, she played one of three sisters in Hiram, followed by the dramedy (drama-comedy) Maid in Heaven in the latter part of that year. After the show ended, Mickey got pregnant and had to retire temporarily from the scene.
She was—and is—very happy with her life now, but when the offer to play the mother of young star Kim Chiu in the new teledrama Sana Maulit Muli came, Mickey was assailed by doubts. She’d always dreamed of returning to active TV work, but now that the opportunity was close at hand, she became nervous and anxious. It had been two years since she’d been on TV; Sana Maulit Muli would be her first project since giving birth. Plus there was the fact that she was being asked to play a mother role. Mickey wasn’t sure she could.
For several days, Mickey had a discussion with herself. She asked herself a lot of hard questions. “I wondered, can I do it [mother role]? Will I be convincing as a mother? Would it be okay for my image?”
The next person she talked to was Archie, who, after being assured that the thrice a week taping schedule could be worked out in such a way that one of them would always be at home with their son, gave her the thumbs-up sign.
Even when she was already on the set, she would wonder if she was doing things right. Sana Maulit Muli director Jerome Pobocan noticed how nervous she was and tried to reassure her. “You’re a little rusty, but don’t worry about it. Give yourself time,” he said.
Eventually, Mickey found her rhythm—and now, it’s like she’s never been away. So what about her other big dream, which is to get married? Will their church wedding push through in 2007?
Mickey says they had originally planned on that, but decided against it after a friend advised them that because the number seven is shaped like an axe, that it would bring bad luck. So instead, their marriage may have to wait until 2008.
But that’s okay, because with all the good things that have been happening to her lately, Mickey’s heart is full.
